mostly memories
Paul Holmes is an American music treasure. Performing a vast repertoire of jazz and popular standards, he brings a composer’s touch to the unique piano improvisations that have made him the first-call in art circles and society settings throughout central North Carolina. This self-imposed geographical restriction, however, is about to be lifted with the release of his first CD, "Mostly Memories."
Recorded at Sorcerer Sound Studios in New York City, where Miles Davis and Bill Evans honed several of their impressive collaborations, Paul creates sheer magic with the songs of America’s best-loved writers. From Jerome Kern to Richard Rogers by way of George Gershwin, Harold Arlen, and Meredith Wilson, Paul demonstrates a subtle and understated sensitivity while delivering rich harmonies and fluid melodic counterpoint in this collection of some of the world’s best-known melodies. He also reveals a musical prowess extending beyond interpretation with the inclusion of his own composition, "Joanne," which stands comfortably and competently alongside those of the American masters.
